What should you look for in a Christian professional counselor?

We are complex creatures, and the task of helping the client unravel the complex into its simpler component parts benefits from someone with experience and training. Below are some general questions that deserve a "yes" answer.

Is the therapist accountable to any local government agency or regulating body?

Are there no unresolved complaints against the therapist?

Is the focus of his/her education specific to counseling, or at least emphasizes counseling?

Does he/she use Biblical principles, admonitions, and directives in therapy and support the position that Scripture is authoritative?

Does he/she admit to areas that others could better help you with and offer a referral?

Is the working of Christ evident in the life of the counselor (ask for his/her testimony)?
